Devon lawyer appointed as Judicial Officer at the World Rugby U20 Championship

Charles Cuthbert, Senior Partner of the West Country legal practice Everys, has been appointed to act as the Judicial Officer to deal with disciplinary matters for the semi-finals and finals of the World Rugby U20 Championship taking place on 13th June and 18th June in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Charles who used to play for Exmouth RFC has been a Judicial Officer with the United Arab Emirates Rugby Federation and Asia Rugby for six years and a World Rugby Judicial Officer for five years. During this period he has travelled to tournaments as varied as the Asian Games in Seoul, the Asia Rugby Championships in Malaysia and Asia Rugby Junior Championships in Singapore whilst dealing with the Dubai leg of the World Rugby Sevens Series.

“I was delighted to learn that Christopher Quinlan QC the Chairman of the World Rugby Judicial Panel had proposed me for this position and that Bill Beaumont, the Chairman of World Rugby had approved my appointment. The U20 Championship is an important tournament in that it is a stepping stone and showcase for the stars of the future.

It may be a particularly intensive period involving some fast navigation between venues if I am required to hold any hearings. There are six semi-final matches on 13th June and six matches (five play-off matches and the final) on 18th June in two different stadiums in Tbilisi.”

More than 470 players have made the step up from the U20 Championship to the test arena since the tournament began in 2008. Three teams have lifted the coveted trophy; New Zealand (2008-11 and 2015), South Africa (2012) and England (2013-14 and 2016). England, as the defending champions after winning the tournament on home soil in Manchester in 2016, are expected to reach the finals.

Amongst the nine captains to have lifted the coveted trophy are established stars such as Aaron Cruden (New Zealand, 2009), Luke Whitelock (New Zealand, 2011), Jack Clifford (England, 2013), Maro Itoje (England, 2014), and up and coming star Harry Mallinder (England, 2016).

There are 30 players named in the Lions squad to tour New Zealand this month who graduated from the U20 Championship.

Charles Cuthbert manages the Everys legal team in Dubai from offices located opposite the World Trade Centre. The team provide private client services as well as corporate and commercial services to UK legal standards and investment manager services.
