Being a Model Trustee
Being a Model Trustee
Want to Be a Model Trustee?
You may have heard that Naomi Campbell, one of fashion’s most iconic figures, was banned from serving as a charity trustee. But what really happened?
The headlines pointed to charity funds being spent on cigarettes and spa trips, but the situation is more nuanced. Charity trustees are allowed to claim reasonable expenses! So, what exactly are “reasonable expenses”?
According to the Charity Commission (E&W), trustees can be reimbursed for:
🚗 Travel
🍕 Meals
🏨 Accommodation
✉️ Postage
☎️ Broadband and phone line rental
📚 Training
The key is that these expenses must be directly related to fulfilling your trustee duties!
Now, what are those trustee duties? Here’s a quick guide to the “Do’s and Don’ts” of being a trustee:
Do:
✅ Follow your trust’s governing documents
✅ Act responsibly, reasonably, and with integrity
✅ Participate in trustee meetings and stay prepared
✅ Maintain accurate records and accounts
Don’t:
❌ Mix trust assets with your own
❌ Profit personally from the trust or charity
❌ Let personal opinions influence your trustee decisions
